I'll never understand why people are so mean.

What good could come of it, anyway? Does it solve anything? NO! Does it make them feel better to be cruel? Probably not. They are most likely just as miserable as ever when they are mean to others.

I work at a service desk at a dormitory at a state university. Sounds pretty simple right? well every freaking time I go to work, somebody or other comes by just to shower me with abuse for no reason other than that their life sucks and they need someone to take it out on. I'm not allowed to talk back or argue with them because I'll get fired if I do something like that. So essentially it has become part of my job to take verbal abuse on a daily basis. I'm good at my job, I really am. I'm polite and respectful when I give service and I've worked her for 3+ years so I have the most job knowledge of anyone here because I've worked here the longest out of anyone. Yet why is it that even when I've done nothing other than provide appropriate service to whomever comes to the service desk, I constantly get chewed out by random jerks for no reason?

Is there EVER a reason to treat somebody like crap and yell at them when all they are trying to do is their job? I certainly don't think so.

Consider this: even if someone provides you with poor service, are you justified in treating them like shit? I certainly don't think anyone's personal conscience is clean enough to be judging other people and being cruel to them based on those judgments.

What happens when you are cruel to someone who makes a mistake? Do you think it motivates them to do better and cheerfully approach every situation with optimism? NO!!! If you scream at someone and beat them down verbally for making a mistake it is only going to make them feel miserable and erode their self confidence. This will not help them improve their performance it will only hurt them.

So please, don't ever do this to anyone. I can tell you from plenty of first hand experience, it doesn't make me a better employee when people scream at me and abuse me, it only makes me cry and shatters my confidence.

I wanted everyone to know that I am more than happy to give for-real critiques designed to point out where the weak points as well as strong points are in your piece of artwork, and try to suggest what you might try to improve. I also wouldn't mind redlining if anyone would like that kind of help. BUT!!!!! I only do this if people mark "critique requested" on the piece, or if they note me to specifically request that I critique the work. The reason for this is simple: I've been bitched out by people for offering constructive critiques before, and I don't care to deal with that since I'm only trying to help when I offer critique.
